Clothing when sailing
Sailing involves water and wind, mix the two and even on a nice summers day, it is easy to get cold. When you are cold you are more likely to make a mistake, and lead to injury. So dress appropriately. When coming for a taster session, you are unlikely to get wet, but incase you do, always have a spare change of clothing.
- Wear a windproof layer such as a light rain coat.
- Wetsuits are great when you are wet and in the water, but when windy you can soon cool down. Make sure the wetsuit fits snug, otherwise the water trapped won't warm up.
- Drysuits can be expensive, but work well to keep you dry. Becareful you don't overheat, heatstroke can be as much of a problem as being cold.
- If you do get wet and start to get cold, take a shower in the wet cloths first and warm yourself up.
- If you want to test the effect of wind on wet skin, blow on your hand, then wet it and blow on it again. You will notice it will be colder. Thats because water is an excellent heat conductor.
